FEBRUARY

Steve Holland has owned and operated Holland Fertilizer in Cedartown for over 21 years.  He announced, at our meeting, that he is passing the baton to his family as he moves into a "working retirement".  Cecily Holland and Melina McCann will take good care of you ... just as they always have!  We wish Steve and Becky all the best as they enjoy all that "free time" they will be able to enjoy.  [I know... all of those who are retiring are saying "what free time?"]

At this time of year, Steve reminds us that this is the time to take your soil samples to the Extension Office and order fertilizer for the spring.  He recommended we fertilize early - once the rains quit long enough to allow the trucks in -- to give our pastures strong roots.

They are still located at 364 Piedmont Avenue where he offers a wide variety of farm fertilizers, chemicals and products for herd health and welfare.   They can order feed in bulk and carry a variety of fencing supplies and gates.  Do you need chickens?  Order them now in time for Spring.  Call today for a quote:  Holland Fertilizer, 770-749-9133.

Remember that ammonium nitrate is always a good option, especially in our hot humid summer when urea breaks down quickly.  Steve is offering Grazon Next mixed and spread with your customized fertilizer blend again this year.  Many in Polk County found it an excellent way to control broadleaf weeds at the same cost as spraying without the extra time in the field.  Just one trip around the pasture by one of Steve’s drivers will boost pasture growth while killing early weeds like buttercups.  Your cattle can continue to graze during and immediately after spreading.

The importance of the “other” nutrients needed for plant health is something else we all need to think about.   Most of us are familiar with  macro-nutrients: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) seen in blends such as 13-13-13.  However, our grasses need more… Think about as a multi-vitamin for your grass and herd!
¨ Boron - facilitates nutrient uptake and helps new tissue growth.
¨ Sulfur - helps plants maintain their dark green color necessary in the formation of chlorophyll, proteins, amino acids, enzymes and vitamins.  It also helps plants resist disease and develop seeds.
¨ Magnesium - critical for growth.  Without it, plans cannot make food through photosynthesis.
¨ Calcium - for root growth and vigor.
Start with a soil test to determine what you may need to add.  Steve Holland will be glad to work with you to determine which nutrients you should add to your fertilizer blend.
